The contest

So I agreed to compete with my friend for one month to lose weight. The idea is we will weigh in at ww every week. Each week the person with the highest percentage of weight loss wins for the week. The loser has to pay $15 into the pot. The person with the highest over all at the end of the 4 weeks wins the pot.
It's a good idea in theory but man I'm going to be broke. I tried really hard this week. Foregoing a lot of things I would have eaten but to no avail I weighed myself at home and there has been no change. I am so frustrated.
While working out last night i was thinking about how fat people even when they lose the weight will always have to work out harder than the average person just to keep it off. I really don't like working out now why do I think I will be any more willing to work out when I've lost the weight.

I've decided to try a new strategy this week instead of photos of half eaten food. 'Cause I was always forgetting. I'm going to count the calories. Now that we've all seen my horrible food choices we'll see if I can keep in under 2000 calories a day

5 months

So its been 5 months since I started this thing and what have I got to show for it? Pretty much nothing.
I can only blame myself for not trying hard enough. I could blame my gym that cancelled one of my exercise classes but let's face it I hardly ever went.
Its pretty much my own fault.
I even bought a set of weights for myself for my birthday at the beginning of June their still sitting in the trunk of my Car, it's pathetic really.

OREM -- During the upcoming Fourth of July weekend, many Utahns will lace up their running shoes for several races scheduled throughout the state.

An Orem woman has signed up for a 5K race in Utah County, not just to better her time, but to encourage other women to get healthy as well. It's a lesson she learned the hard way.

Heidi Ryan

On a hot afternoon at Mountain View High School in Orem, 37-year-old Heidi Ryan continued her training. The Utah Valley University employee is preparing for an upcoming race.

Heidi hopes to improve on her previous 5K time from last year.

"I completed that 5K, starting as the last person across the start line and last across the finish line, but I completed that in 57 minutes," she says.

Fifty-seven minutes for just over 3 miles wasn't bad, considering Heidi had gained 70 pounds over the last five years. This, after losing 80 pounds the year before.

What Heidi didn't know was that weight gain was caused by a very large ovarian cyst.

What is ... an ovarian cystadenoma
A type of ovarian cyst that forms from cells on the outer surface of the ovary. These cysts are often filled with a watery fluid or thick, sticky gel. They can become large and cause pain.

"I got back up to 270 pounds," she says. "Tried everything I could to lose weight. I would lose 10 pounds, gain the 10 pounds back."

Heidi didn't have health insurance, so she put off testing for five years thinking she had metabolic issues like her mother. But test after test came back negative.

What are the symptoms of ovarian cysts?
Many ovarian cysts don't cause symptoms. Others can cause:
  • pressure, swelling, or pain in the abdomen
  • pelvic pain
  • dull ache in the lower back and thighs
  • problems passing urine completely
  • pain during sex
  • weight gain
  • pain during your period
  • abnormal bleeding
  • nausea or vomiting
  • breast tenderness
If you have these symptoms, get help right away:
  • pain with fever and vomiting
  • sudden, severe abdominal pain
  • faintness, dizziness, or weakness
  • rapid breathing

"We had even tried some diabetic medicine to see if that would help lose weight. It didn't help," Heidi says.

It also didn't help that people thought she was pregnant.

"I was actually, one time, sitting in a doctor's office and one of the office managers came up and looked at me and said, ‘Oh, are you going to have twins?'" Heidi recalls.

She was finally diagnosed with a benign ovarian cyst, specifically an ovarian cystadenoma. It measured 20 inches wide by 16 inches deep, and was filled with fluid. It weighed 60 pounds.

"The liquid that was in my cyst, it calculates out to 6.6 gallons, or 25 liters," Heidi says.

Eight weeks ago, Heidi had the cyst removed. She was recently cleared to begin her training. Her goal is to get back into her favorite jeans by the end of summer.

Heidi also hopes her story will motivate other women to get yearly exams.

"If I would have seen a gynecologist five years ago, they would have found it and we could have avoided this whole mess of surgery," she says. "I was given a second chance, I believe."

Now she has a second chance to improve her 5K time too, which ironically comes Monday at Provo's Freedom Festival. It's a perfect time to celebrate her own freedom from poor health while embracing a new lease on life.

Heidi also hopes men will encourage the women in their lives to get their annual checkups.

Pit falls of weight loss

My friend and I were just on a trip together. She's the one I was talking about that has just lost a significant amount of weight. Anyway, she found a skirt in her closet that hasn't fit in a while so she brought it on the trip. She thought it felt a little loose but not bad.
So as we were walking down downtown Disney her skirt just fell right off. I thought it was so funny I couldn't stop laughing. I blocked the view but funny is funny.

Travel

Do you know how hard it is to travel and stay on a diet? Especially if your driving long distances? Trust me its tuff.
When all the passengers in the car fall asleep there is not must to keep you awake. I had purchased a few things to munch on that I thought wouldn't be too bad. The only problem was I couldn't get to them as both me passengers were sleeping and it was in the back seat.
I guess that kind of worked to keep me from eating too much.

Race for the cure

My sister, cousin and I just finished the race for the cure.
We are now packed like sardines in the trax train headed out of the city.
This was my slowest pace yet. I can really tell I've been slacking on the work out. My feet are killing me as usual.

At work we started the eat well live well program we're supposed to try for 10,000 steps a day I'm averaging 4,000 I have a long way to go.

This program last 8 weeks my goal is to be at 10,000 step a day before that last week.

Life s___s

So in cycling yesterday as I'm standing and pedaling the bike makes this popping sound and I'm suddenly having flashbacks to when my bike broke on me. Luckily that didn't happen

Today, I'm wearing an old pair of black dress pants that zip in the back. Do you know how hard that is for a fat person? Anyway I was doing them up at lunch and the zipper broke!
The zipper broke! So I ran to walmart, the closest store, to find a pair of pants to wear for the rest of the day and there's nothing. i end up buying black workout pants hopefully no one will notice I don't meet the dress code.
You would think the fact that I can't find anything to wear on the spur of the moment would motivate me to lose weight, ya not! I'm so depressed I have to buy oreos for lunch.

Working Out

I worked out 4 days this week.

I've decided it's embarrassing to be the fattest person in the exercise class. In spin class it's not so bad I can hide in the back and they dim the lights. In my sports conditioning class it's just ugly. Plus 2 of the 4 walls are mirrored. Like we want to watch ourselves sweat. Ugh.

Weekly results

1.6 pounds is no 8 pound loss which is what it needed to be to make up for my body's disagreement with the scale 2 weeks ago.
So I think this calls for more drastic measures.
I have started to wear a pedometer last week my total was 5000 for the whole week! I think my meter reset itself. I know I walked more then that. I'll have to log it every day just Incase.

Day 1 sort of.


Okay so this should have been day one but it took me this long to figure out how to post this video. I'm still not sure what I did different.

I did this for one week. Some days I was more successful then others but I still lost 4 pounds. Awesome I know. I just have this fear that it was all water and I'll gain it back next week.

Ok so its been most of the day and lunch wasn't to bad. I went to lunch with my friend I tried to focus on my food and still listen to her talk. Don't know how well that went.
Oh and the snack today. I went to the break room and took my yogurt and stood by the counter and ate it and tried to pay attention to it and not eat it at my desk while I was working which was probably better but I can't say that I was fuller doing that. I was starving by lunch time, I'm not usually starving, its probably because I wasn't piecing while I was sitting at my desk so that's probably a good thing.
I did just get in my car to go home and I have crackers in here so I sat and I ate 2 crackers. 2 crackers isn't too bad right?

Just a little update. I paid attention to lunch and man it took a long time. 3 didn't get any reading in cause it took me almost the entire time to eat my little sandwich.
Anyway it was amazing I went to subway and usually when I go to subway I have the sandwich, chips, and the soda and I end up with heartburn a couple hours later but I didn't have chips I did have the soda and the sandwich but I didn't have any heartburn. So I really think this is working. I'm going to keep my positive attitude because I think this is a good idea

Biggest Loser

If people on the biggest loser can lose one hundred pounds in 3 months I should be able to lose 100 pounds in a year. I have just as much to lose as they do. My friend doesn't think I can do it. Just because I've not done very well at losing weight so far.
I guess we'll see.
